Cub Scouts JOTT - May 12

Posted on Monday, 07 May 2012 in Cub Scouts

On Saturday, May 12, the Cub Scouts will be having a hike in the UNB woodlot, the annual JOTT (Jamboree on the Trail). We will meet at the last entrance to the woodlot on your right when you are heading into Fredericton from New Maryland (location shown below).

JOTT will start at 9am, and pickup will be at 11am, in the same location.

White Tail Beavers are encouraged to attend!

Please make sure your Cub Scout is dressed for the weather, including footwear, it will probably still be muddy, especially with the rain forecast for this week. Uniforms are required, but for those in the tan shirt, you do not need your sash.

Please ensure they also have a day pack with water, and a snack. We will have something to share for them as well.

Also, they should be encouraged to bring their survival kit with them (which we are making tonight).

If you could let me know prior to Wednesday if your son/daughter is attending that would be great as I need to pick up the campfire blanket crests before Saturday.

Good Turn Week

Posted on Sunday, 15 April 2012 in All Sections

Good Turn Week is an initiative spearheaded by Scouts Canada National Youth Network that follows the principles of Scouting; to always help others.

Beaver Scouts promise to 'help take care of the world.' Cub Scouts promise to 'do a good turn every day.' In the end, throughout all the groups of Scouts Canada a significant part of our identity as Scouts is that we 'help other people all the time.'

With Good Turn Week, Scouts Canada is encouraging the rest of the country to take on this positive initiative in making the country a happier and friendlier place to live.

How the process works

Our you will receive their Good Turn bracelets this week. Then it's up to them to get the ball rolling. When a Scouts Canada member performs a good deed they then pass on their bracelet to the person receiving the good deed, now it's up to the receiver to pass on the kindness.

But you do not need a bracelet to participate. Doing a "Good Turn" is easy. Here are some examples of what you can do:

  • volunteering at your local food bank
  • helping an elderly neighbour clean their yard
  • making soup for a sick friend
  • helping to maintain community centers
  • treating a friend to lunch
  • helping a friend with homework

Don't let the list stop here, make sure you take any opportunity you can to do good for others, and don't forget to pass on the wrist band and do your part to inspire others to continue our long chain of "Good Turns"!

Cubs Cancelled - March 26

Posted on Monday, 26 March 2012 in Cub Scouts

My apologies for the late notice, but we have just been informed that our meeting place at Sts. John and Paul is not available, as they are painting the room.

We have tried to make alternative arrangements, and unfortunately we have been unable to get a place for tonight.

The ground is too wet, and it is too windy to have a campfire outside, so we will have to cancel for tonight.

We'll make it up to the Cubs :-)

It's Kub Kar Season! Cutting Out - Feb. 13

Posted on Tuesday, 07 February 2012 in Cub Scouts

On Monday, February 13th, we will be cutting out our Kub Kars. We have some resources you can use to help decide what kind of kar you want to build.

The design sheet should be used to get your shape down on paper before drawing it on the block. We are cutting out the kars on Monday night. If you can cut out the kar at home then that's great! Bring the kar all cut out and ready to sand on Monday. We kept the nails and wheels, you will get those next week.

Please note, this is the only time we will be able to cut out the kar.

You can also look at the booklet of kub kar ideas from the Boy Scouts of America. Note do not trace from that sheet. It is American and their rules are much different than ours. You cannot alter the wheelbase on our kars, and their block is a different size. This booklet is for ideas only.

You can be as creative as you want!. You can build up on the kar and make it taller, use lego men on it if you want, etc. If you decide to add weights, please note the bottom of the kar clearance on the design sheet. Also, if you add weights, please note we may have to take some off, so remember that 142 grams is the maximum weight.

Don't paint your kar yet if you do get it cut out, as we'll talk to you about painting ideas and what to be careful of when doing so.

Remember, the goal of this is for your Cub Scout to Do their best, and to have fun!

Cub Scout - Winter Camp

Posted on Saturday, 21 January 2012 in Cub Scouts

Dear Parents

As you know, our Winter Camp is being held from Friday, January 27-Sunday January 29th out at the Yoho Scout Reserve.

Directions to the Scout Reserve can be found here.

Drop off will be any time after 6:30pm, Friday and pick-up is at 11am Sunday. If your Cub Scout is coming for the day on Saturday only, please have them to the main lodge by 12 noon.

Cost for the camp is $30 for the weekend, or $5 for Saturday afternoon, and $15 for Saturday/Sunday. If paying by cheque, please make it payable to 1st New Maryland Scout Group.

We will be sleeping outside in our new cabin tent. It is heated with a wood stove, so please make sure your Cub has appropriate gear, including an extra blanket for inside their sleeping bag, an extra toque and pair of mittens for sleeping in. The tent will be nice and warm, but this will keep them warmer. If the weather is inclement, we will sleep in the main lodge, but please be prepared for either.

Click here for the camp kit checklist.

Saturday is our annual Operation Snowball, an event for all Beaver and Cub Scouts in the area. We expect more than 200 youth out for the afternoon. This camp is always the highlight of our winter!

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any of the leaders.

Jan. 7 - Christmas Tree Pick-Up

Posted on Sunday, 18 December 2011 in All Sections

Christmas is only a few days away, but we do need to think about those trees after Christmas.

On Saturday, January 7th, we will be holding our Annual Christmas Tree Pickup.

We will be meeting at the New Maryland Centre at 9am. We will be going around the village picking up Christmas Trees, for donations. This is a great fundraiser for our group, and a lot of fun! This is also a community service event, and is our last big fundraiser for the year.

We are in need of another truck or two, and if anyone has access to a trailer you could use for the morning, we would appreciate it! This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

All ages are needed, as the bigger kids (and adults if you can help) haul the trees, and the Beaver Scouts go to the door for a donation. We really need a good turn out on events such as this to make it a success, and remember the saying "many hands make light work."

Usually we run this event from 9am-12pm, and then have a lunch afterwards. Details on lunch will be provided as we get closer to the date.

Merry Christmas!

We would appreciate each youth also brings snacks or drinks to share with the group.

Parents are welcome to pick up their Beaver or Cub any time after 7:30pm, but the party will be done for the Beavers and Cubs at 8pm.

If the Scouts are staying until 9pm, D.A. will let you know.

christmastreeThe Village has asked us once again to help out at the New Maryland Christmas Tree Lighting and Candle Light Walk

All youth from all sections should come out in uniform, but where we are handing out lit candles, only the older youth can do that, but the younger ones can help them out!

We are going to be participating in the Fredericton Santa Claus Parade again this year. We hope we can get a good turnout of Youth for the event, which is being held on November 26th.

I will have more details as they become available, but this is what we have so far:

Please note: All float entries/participants are to enter the middle school area via Carrington Lane where they will be directed by the Kinsmen.

Arrival Time: We are float number 12. The Youth need to be at the site around 4pm, 4:30 at the latest.

Please make sure your Beaver/Cub/Scout is dressed properly for the weather, as they will be sitting on the float for a couple hours, and it does get cold.
